Colorado popcorn purveyor Doc Popcorn said Tuesday it has signed its first international franchise deal, in Mexico.
The master franchise agreement is with Rene Garza Pena; his wife, Mariana Mendoza Garza; and operating partner Jose Antonio Cazares Aguirre, Boulder-based Doc Popcorn announced.
The partners plan to open their first location next year in their hometown of Monterrey, a large northeast Mexico city, and calls for as many as 60 units.
"Mexico is the largest U.S. popcorn export market and the best place for our first international master franchise," said Rob Israel, co-founder of the company with his wife, Renee Israel. "We are thrilled to have Rene, Mariana and Jose as partners to bring Doc Popcorn to the Mexican marketplace."
Doc Popcorn launched in 2003 and began franchising in 2009, selling a fresh-popped product in various flavors. It says it now has about 80 locations in 25 states.
